En 1997 en Sligo, un condado del oeste de Irlanda, Kian Egan, Shane Filan y Mark Feehily montaron la obra Vaselina en su colegio, y debido al éxito que tuvieron decidieron formar junto a sus compañeros Derrick Lacey, Graham Keighrony Michael "Miggles" Garrett, un grupo musical llamado "Six as One" y más tarde cambiaron su nombre al de "I.O.YOU" 

El grupo grabó el sencillo: "Together Girl Forever" y después de haber obtenido un éxito discreto, la madre de Shane, Mae, contactó al manager de Boyzone, Louis Walsh del cual habia sido vecina cuando era pequeña, para persuadirlo de representar al grupo.
La lista de integrantes de "I.O.YOU" cambió, 3 miembros (Derek, Graham y Michael) no continuaron más, y entonces tuvieron varias audiciones en Dublín con objeto de encontrar dos nuevos elementos para el grupo. De entre 300 aspirantes eligieron a Bryan McFadden, quien venia saliendo de la Escuela de Artes Escénicas de Billie Barry y Nicholas Byrne ex aprendiz de fútbol en Leeds United.
El grupo comenzó a realizar pequeñas presentaciones para las compañías discográficas, y finalmente firmaron con BMG en Septiembre de 1998, teniendo que cambiar nuevamente el nombre por el de "Westside". El grupo empezó siendo telonero de "Backstreet Boys" en Dublín, y más tarde viajó por el Reino Unido e Irlanda con Boyzone en octubre de 1998.
Su popularidad creció rápidamente después de su primera aparición en el programa SMTV de la televisión del Reino Unido en noviembre de 1998, como también el concierto dado en Smash Hits en diciembre del mismo año, logrando ganar su primer premio como "Nuevo Artista Pop"
Después de Navidad "Westside" continuó su camino al éxito con su aparición en "Childline" Concierto en Dublín.
La fecha para el lanzamiento del que sería el primer single de "Westside" ya estaba prevista pero antes de ello el grupo se vio obligado a cambiar su nombre ya que se descubrió que en Estados Unidos ya había varios grupos llamados "Westside" con la posibilidad que esto, en un futuro, causara problemas. Teniendo que empezar a considerar nuevos nombres, entre los cuales salió "Westbeat"; pero finalmente se eligió Westlife.
